Gut health has been a hot topic lately and while almost everyone can benefit from improving their gut health I feel like a lot of people over-diagnose themselves.

Not everyone has candida or leachy gut so let's stop implementing crazy restriction/elimination diets when they probably aren't necessary.

When a client comes to me with pretty bad IBS and gut issues I will take them through these 5 simple tips before we decide to get crazy.

90% of the time implementation of these tips will dramatically improve there gut health.

It's important to note that you SHOULD NOT implement all of these at once.

Start with one. See how it works. Then move on to the next.

This approach enables you to really assess what is actually working and what is probably just wasting there time.

TIP #1: Remove Inflammatory Foods

Remove all foods that might be creating an inflammatory response. The less inflamed your gut/body is te better your digestion is gonna be. Gas, bloating, cramping, or feeling lethargic can all be signs of inflammation.

TIP #2: Increase your consumption of probiotic-rich foods

Foods like sour kraut, kimchi, kefir, yogurt, and kombucha drinks are all great ways to get more probiotics in your day. It's important to note that because of the yeast in kombucha, overconsumption of it can actually make gut issues worse. So I always recommend limiting the consumption of kombucha and use other food sources more.

TIP#3: Increase you consumption of prebiotic-rich foods

Prebiotics can be found most abundantly in vegetables, so it's important that we are consuming enough veggies to feed all the healthy bacteria that live in our gut. A good recommendation is 4-6 servings a day.

TIP #4: Fast

Fasting or not eating for at least 12 hours has been shown to give your digestive system a break and can give it a chance to work through anything leftover from eating. In turn, actually improving your digestion once you begin eating again.

TIP #5: Reduce Stress

Being in a parasympathetic mindset to often can leave your body unable to digest food properly. This is known as "fight or flight". Optimal digestion happens in a sympathetic mindset, also known as "rest & digest." So it is important to reduce stress as much as possible to ensure you are digesting food properly.
